New Design & Gauge for 1.3' Key of G Shakuhachi
Smaller shakuhachi 1.3' (G), 1.4' (F#), 1.5' (F) are frequently used by Minyo (Folk Music) players in Japan. These performers plays in ensemble with koto, shamisen, biwa, voice, hence need to have flutes in all the keys on hand. Shorter shakuhachi that play well in the higher octaves are difficult to make. My new 1.3' is a breakthrough in this regard. It is accurately tuned to standard Western pitch and has a strong resonant sound through the complete range of notes.
Apologies for blowing my own horn, but I'm delighted to offer the first of these new 1.3' gauges in an affordable Student model that plays remarkably well.

This wonderful and exquistly produced DVD is a perfect introduction to the world of shakuhachi for both novice and season players. It features Yoshinobu Taniguchi performing solo shakuhachi honkyoku as well as exerpts from the duet Shika no Tone with Michael Chikuzen Gould. Filmed in Japan at the Myoanji, Kokkukuji, Enryakuji, Tenryu and Horyuji Temples, as well as at the Shosoin Imperial Warehouse housing a rare collection of ancient historical instruments, this video is introduced and narrated by esteemed Japapnese ethnomusicologist Professor Emeritus William P. Malm of the University of Michigan. Prof. Malm reviews the history and evolution of shakuhachi from its origins to the modern Fuke shakuhachi used by the Komuso priests of the Myoanji Temple. A visit to the workshop of the late Kono Gyokusui shows in detail how bamboo is selected and the shakuhachi meticulously crafted. Taniguchi-sensei next demonstrates the scales used in traditional shakuhachi music, variations in the nuanced tone production and techniques employed in playing honkyoku pieces. A segment of the Kinko-ryu honkyoku Hi Fu Mi Hachigaeshi no Shirabe is performed following its musical notation note-by-note.

| Mamino Unryu Yorita / 寄田 雲龍 真見乃 MAIDEN VOYAGE - 初音 / はつね |
|
MAMINO UNRYU YORITA / 寄田 雲龍 真見乃 is a truly remarkable shakuhachi player and a prodigy of the highest order. In 2006, at the age of 15, she became the youngest woman ever to be awarded a Shihan by the Tozan-ryu. This extraordingary accomplishment was acknowledged by the press throughout Japan. Wanting to learn classical shakuhachi, Mamino began studying Kinko ryu honkyokuwith Yoshinobu Taniguchi soon thereafter. She has also studied with Living National Treasure Aoki Reibo and Katsuya Yokoyama, who referred to her as a "genius". Her remarkable accomplishments testify to this fact. In just one year, she passed the Dai shihan (Grandmaster) exam (Kinko-ryu) and in 2008, passed the Dai shihan (Grand Master) exam (Watazumido, Fuke Meian ryu, Koden classical shakuhachi and Azuma ryu). At the age of 18, even before graduating from high school, Mamino received the Meiyo Dai Shihan rank (Honorable Grand Master), an achievement that was totally unprecedented. In 2009, she gained admission to Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku (Tokyo University of the Arts) where she presently studies shakuhachi.
